Núcelo de Educação Ambiental

The Journalist Washington Novaes Environmental Education Center (NEA), located at the Dr. Hélio Seixo de Britto Sewage Treatment Plant (ETE Goiânia), is a prominent Saneago initiative that works directly to promote environmental awareness and education. Operating since 2001, the environmental education teams have already impacted more than 2 million people, including children, young people and adults from different regions, reinforcing their essential role in building a society that is more aware and responsible in relation to the environment and the conscious use of water resources.

How do we do?

These centers play a fundamental role in the context of ESG and SDGs, promoting not only the awakening of critical awareness about environmental challenges, but also contributing to the sustainable development of the corporate environment. Their activities are aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals, especially SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), by promoting Educommunication spaces for responsible management of water resources.

By focusing on the formation of critical environmental awareness, the program strengthens the culture of sustainability among the company's customers and society, promoting practices that positively impact the environment and society as a whole. Furthermore, by promoting educommunication and awareness, the project directly contributes to strengthening environmental governance, reinforcing Saneago's corporate responsibility in meeting its ESG goals.

Our operating assumptions

In all Environmental Education Centers, whether in Goiânia or in the State’s Regional Centers, we seek to adapt our actions according to the needs of each target audience, offering a versatile approach that reaches different groups in an effective and personalized manner. Currently, the NEAs serve a wide variety of audiences, including Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, High School, Technical Courses, Higher Education, as well as public and private companies.

Our activities are developed with the objective of raising awareness and educating about the environmental impacts caused by human action over the years, while at the same time presenting practical and sustainable solutions for the preservation of natural resources, especially water. We use lectures as a central intervention tool, addressing topics such as environmental preservation and the conscious use of water resources.

For Early Childhood Education, Elementary and High School audiences, we incorporate playful and interactive elements, such as puppet plays, educational videos and engaging stories. These dynamic activities are complemented by a tour of the Sewage Treatment Plant (ETE Goiânia) aboard a little train, providing an educational and fun experience.

For Technical Education, Higher Education and corporate audiences, we adopt a more technical and detailed approach, exploring how the unit's effluent treatment processes work. These activities aim to provide an in-depth understanding of sanitation and water resource management mechanisms, highlighting the importance of technological solutions and sustainable practices in preserving the environment.

Environmental degradation, especially in relation to water resources, has been an evident reality over the decades. However, the responsibility for preserving these resources is shared by the entire population. Since its founding in 1967, Saneago has been committed to promoting the quality of life and health of the population of Goiás, generating results with sustainability, especially with regard to the use and conservation of water.

In this context, this program acts as an extension of this commitment, seeking to raise awareness and educate society about the importance of preserving natural resources. Our mission is to make it easier to understand that water and other natural resources are finite, and that preservation depends on conscious daily actions. We believe that by awakening critical and environmental awareness, we can promote effective changes in consumption habits, contributing to the conservation and responsible use of water resources. Thus, NEAs reinforce Saneago's premise of combining the promotion of health and well-being with sustainability, ensuring a more balanced future for all.

In 2023, more than 369,620 people were served with corporate environmental education practices in person, consolidating Saneago's commitment to sustainability and the population's quality of life, in accordance with environmental and regulatory principles. With more than 120 environmental agents throughout the state and the support of the Environmental Education supervision and Management units, the Program established an internal communication network, achieving significant results.

In partnership with the Regional Environmental Education Centers (NEARs), the Goiânia Center adopts education and mass communication strategies to ensure the systemic provision of corporate environmental education, aligned with the company's strategic guidelines and the principles of ESG, SDGs and the UN Global Compact.

The actions carried out by Saneago demonstrate the Company's commitment to the efficient support of the Environmental Education Supervision and the Environmental Education and Social Actions Management, linked to the Environment and Water Resources Superintendence, with the promotion of corporate environmental education as an essential instrument to ensure water availability and promote environmental sustainability for the state of Goiás.

The internal education and communication networks established between the 17 regional offices and the coordinating unit, through various contact channels, stand out as an effective strategy for the exchange of information and experiences. This synergy contributes not only to the dissemination of good environmental practices, but also to maximizing the reach of educational actions in all communities served by Saneago.

Educational and Environmental Projects carried out in Partnerships:

Environmental Express Project

It brings educational activities to several municipalities on an itinerant basis, addressing topics such as Environmental Education, Educational Technologies and Water Security. This project is being implemented and has partnerships with the Digital Rectory of the Federal University of Goiás (UFG), which is involved in the production of 360° videos about Saneago's operational units. The use of technologies such as virtual reality glasses and video projections is also in the acquisition phase through these collaborations, with the entire system being powered by solar energy.

Annual Action Plan – Water Shortage

Educommunication practices aimed at the rational use of water are encouraged. Partnerships with public and private schools are essential for holding lectures and distributing informative materials. Joint efforts with local and regional institutions directly contribute to mitigating the impacts of water shortages during the dry season that the state of Goiás faces every year. The importance of these collaborations is also reflected in Saneago's efforts to decarbonize its activities, initiating debates and internal actions to reduce its environmental footprint.
